I’ve got the sequel waiting for me on my kindle. I think I finally found that Ruby Dixon vibe I’ve been looking for. I especially appreciate the fact that the minotaur didn’t turn into the kind of alpha personality that is less alpha and mostly just a jerk. It’s kind of amazing how a story about a young lady who takes a job giving handjobs to minotaurs for science turns into something sweet and romantic. That doesn’t bother me if the story is good, but it’s still nice when you don’t have to autocorrect as you read. Sometimes these very specific genres suffer from amateurish writing. The first thing that stood out to me was the skillful writing. And having read some reviews and the description, I need to know how both are accurate, because it doesn’t seem likely. I need to know which cover is more fitting. The one on the right looks more like the extreme/splatter stuff I like. The one on the left looks like a romantic fantasy. I’m starting this review before I’ve even started the book because the difference between the Audible cover, which is the one I saw when I came across this book in a recommendation thread, and the one I got with the kindle download is so striking and just plain funny to me.

Sex scenes in literary fiction are often designed to highlight the risibility of living inside a flesh prison (as compared with the lofty and un-embodied life of the mind), and one major litmag invented an entire award whose explicit purpose was to shame authors out of ever writing sex scenes at all. It’s all abjection and solipsism and mortification and derision it’s all ableism and sizeism and misogyny and discrimination. In fairness to my younger self, the tenor of the sex scenes historically allowable by the literary establishment is grim, my friends. I’d been bamboozled by a mindset, common among English majors, wherein fictional sex and any non-contemptuous perspective on embodiment were well beneath the notice of the serious reader. Sex scenes were a major barrier to entry when I was first getting into romance novels. Subscribe to our New Releases Lists and The Comic Collective. The enterprise is very strange and, as Thomas Mann wrote in The Magic Mountain, “it is clear that time, while the medium of the narrative, can also become its subject. Despite this indeterminacy, novelists convey invented characters through linear time and even seek to imagine their “duration” as well. It is impossible to know precisely how other people experience time. As in: time flies when you’re having fun. We conduct our lives with reference to an agreed symbolical system, clock time, and yet there is also the wholly subjective experience of time – which the philosopher Henri Bergson called la durée or duration. This question – of the nature of time itself, and the nature of our experience of time – is ancient and baroque. A li Smith’s latest novel is billed as the first in a four-part series, Seasonal, with each novel to be named, as the title suggests, after a season: Smith seeks thus to explore “what time is, how we experience it”.
